A recent study says obesity levels are rising fast in the country of 1.3 billion people, with more than a quarter of the adult population overweight or obese.

Dr. Zhao Jizhong owns a clinic, which employs massage and acupuncture for weight loss. He says that while massage and acupuncture don't make fat miraculously disappear, they cause weight loss indirectly.

"The main reason for us to develop such therapies is to promote blood circulation. It suppresses the sense of hunger, and promotes the resistance of insulin. The fat then gets digested out of the system.”

Song Yonghong, a weight loss patient said "Out of all weight losing methods, this is the most relaxed and the easiest way. You will feel more energetic even without injections and medicine. I have decided to adopt this wonderful weight loss therapy for the rest of my life."

According to Dr. Zhao, patients tend to lose between five to 10 pounds in 12 massage sessions.

Food. It is leaving some cookies on the plate because you know you can have some again tomorrow, or it is eating more now because they taste so wonderful when they are fresh.

Normal eating is overeating at times: feeling stuffed and uncomfortable. Adult obesity rates increased in 23 U.S. states last year and did not fall in a single state, an annual survey released on July 1 found. Adult obesity rates now exceed 25% in 31 states, up from 28 states last year and 19 the year before that.

The problem appears destined to continue worsening, too, the report indicates. Among children 10-17, about 30% are overweight or obese in 30 states, says the survey, which also examined youth this time around. Study after study has found that overweight children are more likely to become obese as adults, and obese children are almost certain to remain that way. "There is a huge wave of obese adults coming that will bankrupt us as a nation unless we get this under control now," said Dr. James S. Marks, senior vice-president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The survey, titled F as in Fat: How Obesity Problems Are Failing in America, was conducted by the non-profit organizations Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It depicts a disconcerting increase in a condition that, when combined with attendant risks such as diabetes and heart disease, make up the most expensive burdens on the nation's health-care system.

The researchers noted that overweight people tend to live as long as the thin, but with far more chronic diseases that are costly to treat. "How are we going to compete with the rest of the world if our economy and workforce are weighed down by bad health," said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America's Health.

The researches did see a slim sign of hope, in that only 23 states showed an increase in obesity rates this year, compared with 37 with higher rates in last year's survey. Still, the report found that two-thirds of U.S. adults are now considered overweight or obese, as determined by their body-mass index, a measure of weight in relation to a person's height. The survey also found that four states have obesity rates above 30%: Mississippi (32.5%), West Virginia (31.2%), Alabama (31.1%), and Tennessee (30.2%).

Adult obesity rates now exceed 20% in 49 states plus the District of Columbia. Only Colorado, where 18.9% of the population is obese, falls below the 20% mark. Still, in 1991, no state had an obesity rate above 20%.

Adult obesity rates increased in 19 states in the past year, to the point where more than 10% of the population in seven states now has type 2 diabetes. More than 20 million adult Americans now have diabetes, and prevalence of the disease has doubled over the past 10 years, from 4.8 people per 1,000 to 9.1 per 1,000. A further 57 million Americans are pre-diabetic, which means they are at high risk and likely to develop the disease in 5 to 10 years.

The survey was done by combining three years of data, 2006-08, from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention's behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Childhood obesity and overweight rates are based on the National Survey of Children's Health.

The researchers noted that the current recession could exacerbate the obesity crisis, because prices for fruits, vegetables, and other healthier foods are rising at the same time incomes are falling. They also pointed out that the Baby Boom generation, now beginning to retire, is the fattest cohort yet, which could significantly burden Medicare. In every state, the 55-64 age group has a higher rate of obesity than people over 65, an ominous sign for Medicare. The researchers calculate that the number of obese Medicare patients could increase by anywhere from 5.2% in New York to 16.3% in Alabama.

Eight of the 10 most obese states are in the South, with Michigan and Ohio rounding out the list. The survey found that adult obesity rates rose for a second straight year in 16 states and a third consecutive year in 11 states. Mississippi has consistently held the top spot for the past three years, while Colorado has been at the bottom of the list.

Mississippi also has the highest percentage of children who are overweight or obese, at 44.4%, while Minnesota and Utah were tied for the lowest, at 23.1%. said Lynda Powell, PhD, chairperson of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Rush and the study's principal investigator. "In our study, depressive symptoms were clearly related to deposits of visceral fat, which is the type of fat involved in disease."

The study included 409 middle-aged women, about half African-American and half Caucasian, who were participating in the Women in the South Side Health Project (WISH) in Chicago, a longitudinal study of the menopausal transition. Depressive symptoms were assessed using a common screening test, and visceral fat measured with a CT scan. Although waist size is often used as a proxy for the amount of visceral fat, it is an inaccurate measure because it includes subcutaneous fat, or fat deposited just beneath the skin.

The researchers found a strong correlation between depression and visceral fat, particularly among overweight and obese women. The results were the same even when the analysis adjusted for other variables that might explain the accumulation of visceral fat, such as the level of physical activity. The study found no association between depressive symptoms and subcutaneous fat. The findings were the same for both black and white women.

Powell speculated that depression triggers the accumulation of visceral fat by means of certain chemical changes in the body – like the production of cortisol and inflammatory compounds – but said that more research is needed to pinpoint the exact mechanism.

Triglycerides Too High?

Triglycerides are the form in which fat moves through the bloodstream to your body's tissues. Whenever your LDL ("bad") cholesterol is measured, triglycerides are checked, too. Levels lower than 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) are considered normal and levels above 200 mg/dL are considered too high. However, those parameters may be changing in light of recent research on cardiovascular health. Desired normal levels may be as low as 100 mg/dl.

High triglyceride levels can be genetic, and may be related to obesity or untreated diabetes, but dietary influences are strong. Carbohydrates in the diet are the main factor affecting their levels in the blood, especially quick-digesting (high glycemic load) carbs. In many people, these foods elevate insulin levels, and insulin affects triglyceride synthesis and the storage of fat. High triglyceride levels usually accompany low HDL (good) cholesterol and often travel with tendencies toward high blood pressure and central (abdominal) obesity. These are the markers of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, very common disorders that increase risks of heart and adult-onset diabetes.

I recommend several lifestyle changes to help keep your serum triglyceride levels down in the desirable range. You will want to get regular exercise; lose weight if you're overweight; reduce the amount of saturated fats and trans fat in your diet; and cut back on alcohol, avoiding beer especially. (Even small amounts of alcohol can elevate triglyceride levels.) Also increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids by eating salmon, sardines, black cod, and herring on a regular basis. Or take a good fish oil supplement, as you are doing, 1-2 grams a day.

The conventional medical recommendation for a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet to lower triglycerides and bring down cholesterol is dead wrong in my opinion. Instead you want to be on a low carbohydrate diet, such as my anti-inflammatory diet. Familiarize yourself with the concept of glycemic load (http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm) and choose carbohydrate foods that rank low on that scale.

Happy Earth Day 2009

Happy Earth Day to everybody!

Earth Day... When a person has a good body image, they tend to have good self esteem and vice versa. However, if you suffer from low self esteem, you will tend to have a very poor image and this can be detrimental to your weight loss.

When you are overweight, it is very easy to have low esteem and have a poor body image of yourself. You constantly worry about how you look and how others see you and this in turn will affect yourself. If you want to lose weight successfully in addition to following a calorie controlled diet and upping your fitness levels, you need to look at your body image and self esteem. Maybe you feel ashamed about how you look and see a fat, ugly person each time you look in the mirror - and this will have an effect on your weight. Even if you are doing well, you will not recognize it as your body image are so low and this will make you feel worse and can even make you give up on your fat loss program.

To really give your weight loss efforts, a massive boost you need to start to think differently about yourself. It may take you some time but try to be positive about yourself and work on raising your body image and self esteem. So rather than thinking about how much weight you still have to lose each time, you weigh yourself - think about how much you have lost so far and feel proud of yourself.

Concentrate on doing this and noticing the changes in your body each time you lose a few pounds and it will have a positive effect on you, which will help you to lose even more weight. Just the thought of diet and exercise is a tiresome and defeating feeling. Weight loss motivation isn't easy. I mean, who gets motivated about restriction and work. Today we are going to review some tips on how to stay motivated toward a thinner you.

First and for most, you must comprehend that no one is perfect and from time to time you will fall off your diet and exercise routine. This is a huge concept because most of us do so well for 3 weeks to 2 months that we fail to allow ourselves room for error. After a diet crash, most of us will give up, we tell ourselves, "The damage is already done, I will start a new diet in a few days", but we know a few days turns into a few months. Allow yourself room to make mistakes, true weight loss will only come once this concept is realized.

Find a health partner. We all need a support system. We all need someone to talk with every now and then. Since many people are overweight, it would not be too difficult to find someone with weight loss ambitions. As with anything, constantly thinking positive helps, so make sure you make it a habit to surround yourself with positive people. The world is full of too many negatives, and the last thing you need is someone dragging you down.

At the end of the day, its not about diet and exercise. It should be more about healthiness and serenity.

Lets stop thinking.....

• I want to look good
• I want to fit in those pants
• I want people to notice me

Lets start thinking.....

• I want to live longer
• I want to have peace of mind
• I want more energy

If your goals are to just look better, then chances are you may find it hard to keep the weight off, but if your goals are to be healthier and feel great then you are on your way to true weight loss and happiness. It's not about pleasing people, but it will always be about finding the healthiness and happiness inside. I hope this article helps motivate you toward your weight loss objectives, if anything, remember that true weight loss can be obtained, but you must go into it with the right state of mind.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is what your body needs at rest to maintain normal bodily functions like beating of our heart, respiration, and the maintenance of body temperature at a thermostatic setting just under 100 deg, etc. All these mechanical and thermometric functions require a base level of energy. About 60-75% of energy is expended by the body at rest in such activities.

You use another 10% of calories to digest and metabolize food. 1-3 hours after meal, the nutrients in your bloodstream and the food your stomach and intestines produce heat in a process called the thermic effect of food. The amount of calories you burn varies with the type of food you eat. You burn more calories to breakdown a steak than a banana and very few calories are expanded in breaking down simple sugars.

The resting metabolism depends on age, physical condition, the amount of fat and muscle in your body. You had a very high metabolism at your birth. At mid thirties, metabolism slows by 3 to 5 % per decade. By age 55, you require 150 fewer calories per day than in your mid thirties. For that reason, you should cut back on calories or increase your activity level to burn more calories, otherwise you will store additional fat in your body resulting in increased weight.

The metabolic rate depends on sex, age, and amount of muscle. Younger persons have higher (faster) metabolism because of the increased activity of cells. Men generally have a 10-15% faster BMR than women because male body has greater percentage of lean muscle tissues. Exercise can increase your BMR.

Causes for Low Metabolism:-

1. Fasting.

2. A low calorie diet.

3. Snacking throughout the day on high sugared foods (candy, colas, cakes, gum).

4. Eating or drinking too much sugar containing foods.

5. Lack of physical activity.

6. Under active thyroid.

How to Increase (speed up) Metabolism?

1. To boost metabolism, do not skip any meals. Eat every 4-5 hours during the day. Starving will slow down your metabolism.

2. Exercise daily

3. Build your muscles. Do you Know: 1 pound of fat burns only 2 calories a day while 1 pound of muscle burns 50 calories a day !!! The more muscle you build, the faster your metabolism will be, and the more calories you will burn while at rest. When muscle mass decreases, the metabolic rate also drops.

4. Avoid alcohol, sugar, and fastings.

5. Drink 10-12 glasses of water daily.

6. Due to menopause, most women gain weight. There are various reasons for weight gain at this stage. Slowdown in the metabolic rate due to aging is the main factor for obtaining that extra flab in their body.

Usually the stress levels of women over 40 are quite high. They have more responsibilities. Lack of physical activities at this age also causes weight gain. One should be extra cautious about the diet and lifestyle after 40. Due to aging, most women undergo hormonal imbalances, which further increases their chances to gain weight.

Weight gain over 40 can be prevented as well as reversed. In order to look younger than your age, you should have proper diets and exercises. A healthy lifestyle is very necessary to shed those extra pounds. In order to prevent weight gain, you should do regular cardio workouts such as running, swimming, hiking, and brisk walking. Brisk walking is the most preferred workout for women over 40. Alternate Weight training is also highly recommended in order to build lean muscle. These processes help your body to engender metabolism that consequently stimulates fat burning.

It is also extremely necessary for you to drink plenty of water - at least 10 to 12 glasses of water daily. A balanced diet with fruits, green colored vegetables and fist sized protein plus some little compound carbo will be highly recommended for those aiming for a younger and healthier looking after 40.

You Are Your Environment

Always be mindful that you're a product of your environment. So choose an environment that will best develop you toward your objective.

Analyze your life in terms of your environment. You're not a captive of your environment.

If you don't like where you are, you can make some changes. You're not planted permanently in the ground like a tree. What am I doing eating this muffin anyway? It's so caloric and filled with saturated fat. I'm such a pig. I have absolutely zero willpower.” It's no wonder you'll eat that muffin with the butter and jelly on top to quiet that negative self-talk.

See what a holistic nutritional coach advise us....

What you need more than a diet is a way to shift those negative self-defeating thoughts to more adaptive, positive self-statements. As with most things worth doing, this requires a bit of practice. First, become aware when you're using a negative statement, then determine what about that thought is faulty and finally, replace it with a self-defense response or coping thought. In the corn muffin example, instead of listening to “I'm such a pig” which clearly mislabels who you are, respond with “Pigs are animals and I am human. I don't have to be perfect.”

Many people cannot change their eating habits until they change their thoughts about food, eating and drinking. By shedding “distorted” thoughts and replacing them with productive ones, eating habits can be changed. It is possible to rid yourself from many self-critical thoughts, but like any ingrained habit, it takes vigor and vigilance to change. Here are some other thinking distortions to challenge:

Shoulds. Should statements are more about other people's values, not ones chosen by the person who wants to lose weight. Additionally, should statements reflect an attempt by the dieter to motivate herself without really believing in the value. Better to determine what works for you. “I will eat up to two Hershey kisses daily and thoroughly enjoy them.”

All-or-Nothing. This kind of reasoning is the foundation for perfectionism. An all-or-nothing individual views the world as black or white. Since there is no allowance for gray areas, the behavior is either perfect or a failure. “I've ruined my diet by eating all that pizza. I can't stay on a diet and I'll just always be fat.” Maybe the problem does not arise from the behavior… maybe the problem is with the diet that does not allow for pizza. “I do not want to give pizza up for the rest of my life, so what I need is a way to include pizza in my diet without feeling like a failure. Let me try having a salad (dressing on the side) before the pizza to take the edge off my hunger.”

Good Foods / Bad Foods. If the truth be told, foods do not misbehave. Foods are not good or bad. While it is true that some foods have more nutrients or are more fiber-dense than others, all foods can be enjoyed. How we think about food colors what we eat and how much we eat. If a food is labeled as bad (such as fries), then for many individuals that food is taboo. When one eventually succumbs to eating the forbidden, French fries, bingeing may result. Rather than continue with dichotomous thinking of good food/bad food, shift to allow space for all foods you like without judgement. Instead of “I ate those fries which are so bad for me” to “I really enjoyed that small portion of fries. They really satisfied me.”

Body Distortions. Rather than dwelling on how fat or thin you think your body is, it is extremely helpful to view your body in terms of what it can do for you. For example, when you look in the mirror, instead of zooming in on your stomach which “looks five months pregnant, although your last baby was nine years ago” tell yourself “my body has given life” or “my body enables me to go where I want to and allows me to have fun.”

The conversations that are going on inside your head cannot be stopped. However, what you can do is to be aware of negative self-talk and understand that it has little to do with actual reality. When you believe this, you can respond to the critical voice with a more objective, coping thought. Although negative thoughts may not be stopped entirely, they can be quieted by listening to your compassionate, caring voice. In much the same way you would sympathize and listen to a close friend, listen to yourself. Be your own best friend and chances are you'll have greater weight loss success.

How To Burn Fat Quickly

Burning fat quickly can be frustrating and difficult to achieve. However, it is possible, especially if you know exactly how to do it. If you want to burn fat quickly, keep reading this article, and you're sure to gain the insight needed to burn fat quickly and easily.

1) Proper Diet is very important if you want to burn fat quickly. In fact, nothing else is as important, which is why you should have a very close look at your diet before you try anything else. In order to burn fat quickly, ask yourself how many times per day you eat and how big your portion sizes are?

Most people eat far too much food at each meal. Either that, or they don't eat enough, and their body goes into starvation mode. If you want to, you should avoid both of those possibilities.

2) Multivitamins are a great way to ensure you are getting the vitamins you need. The healthier your body is, the better the chances that you'll burn fat.

If you're weight training, whey protein is a good investment. You can use it to make delicious shakes that can be used as a meal replacement in a pinch. You can mix it with water or low fat milk, and drink away right after an intense workout.

If you want to burn fat quickly, you have to combine good nutrition, exercise and superior supplementation to succeed. Think of it as a big chain. If one of the links is weak, the entire chain is useless. Without the proper vitamins, minerals, and detoxification, you may be halting your fat loss efforts before they even begin. Good luck!

Why Does Fast Weight Loss Programs Always Fail?

If you are anything like the rest of the millions of people that are constantly trying to lose weight, you have probably ran in to all kinds of fast weight loss dieting programs that promises super quick results. But what is the truth behind these diets?

Here's a little news flash for you; those fast diets are for idiots! The whole weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar business and if that doesn't allure the scam artists then I don't know what would. Sure, with some of the quick weight loss programs on the market you may lose some weight and actually do it quite fast, but do not get fooled, it all will come back to you with interests! You will just end up getting even fatter than what you used to be.

What Exactly Is Wrong With The Fast Weight Loss Programs?

The major reason why these "lose weight fast" programs fail is that they are designed to do something impossible. Now I'm not saying that you couldn't lose weight and get into a healthy shape in a reasonable time if you do the right things and follow the right advice. I'm just saying that these ordinary quick weight loss systems will not ultimately make you lose FAT.

Now like I said, they all have a huge flaw in the way they were designed, they try to fool your body to do something that, well, just will not happen. Our metabolic and hormonal systems are very clever and they know when they are trying to be fooled. Working against these systems, like the most quick weight loss diets do, may help you to lose some fat tissue in the beginning, but in the long run they only help you to lose muscle tissue and actually gain fat tissue.

So Is Losing Weight Fast Even Possible?

Yes and no, yes it is very much possible for anybody to lose some weight rather quickly, but no, you shouldn't expect any miraculous results in the next two weeks. It does take months but once you get there, I guarantee that you will look back glad that you did make that decision to go through with it. The findings support the hypothesis that higher postprandial glycemia is a universal mechanism for disease progression."

High grain breads, and other low GI foods, are therefore recommended in the promotion of a healthier diet.

Between 2003 and 2006, the number of new whole grain product launches fairly doubled every year - from 64 in 2003, to 140 in 2004, to 346 in 2005, to 620 in 2006, according to Mintel.

This reflects the race by food manufacturers to carve out a slice of the market during the initial period of rapid growth, which ran parallel to the growth in consumer awareness of the healthy grains.

The researchers had found that results from previous observational studies had been inconsistent and had prolonged the controversy over the effects of GI and GL on the risk of certain chronic diseases.

A statement from the University of Sydney drew attention to the fact that the diets of nearly two million healthy men and women worldwide were reviewed.

The University statement quotes lead author Alan Barclay as saying: "If you have a constantly high blood glucose and insulin levels due to a high GI diet, you may literally 'wear out' your pancreas over time. Eventually it may lead to type 2 diabetes in older age."

However, he said that he was more surprised by the relationship between GI and some of the other diseases. With regard to cancer he concluded: "This is because constant spikes in blood glucose that cause the body to release more insulin also increase a related substance called 'insulin like growth factor one' (IGF-1). Both these hormones increase cell growth and decrease cell death, and have been shown to increase the risk of developing cancer."

The University statement defines high GI foods as carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion, causing blood glucose levels to increase quickly and stay higher for longer, for example most biscuits.

Low GI carbohydrates break down more slowly during digestion, releasing glucose gradually into the bloodstream, with leading examples including muesli, whole- or multi-grain bread and fruit.

Source : The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

"Magic" Mushrooms

A growing number of health-care experts say a particular mushroom - cordyceps is, well.....magic.

Why? Turns out, it has a unique ability to increase blood flow, thus boosting oxygen supplied to all our cells; clinical trials have already shown cordyceps has the power to improve everything from pulmonary and heart disease to arthritis and low libido. In ancient China, use of cordyceps sinensis was reserved exclusively for the Emperor's Palace. Researchers have also begun to test the mushroom's ability to trigger fat loss. Early results: Very promising! One study found that folks taking a cordyceps supplement lost 20% of their body weight in just 12 weeks – without dieting.

How it works? “Over time, tiny receptors in our bodies that regulate the blood-sugar hormone insulin can become clogged,” says Cordyceps Miracle author Paul Ling Tai, D.P.M. When that happens, we can't process carbohydrates properly, and they often get converted to fat instead of energy. “Cordyceps cleans the receptors out,” Tai explains. So you instantly begin storing less fat and generating extra energy. You move more, burn more calories and stop craving sugar to boost stamina. Blood sugar becomes steadier, further reducing cravings. “Plus, cordyceps creates a hormonal balance that keeps metabolism higher,” Tai adds.

No wonder a cordycps-based supplement regimen has helped his patients lose up to 40 pounds! Who are they safe for? "Anyone who isn't illergic to mushrooms," notes Tai. How much should I take? Tai recommended to take 300mg-1,150mg, depends on the body condition. Three times daily with meals.

The Antioxidant Miracle

A pill that strengthens your heart, sharpens your mind, keeps your body young, extends your life, prevents cancer, and keeps your skin wrinkle-free? Sounds like a joke or a dream, doesn't it? According to molecular cell biologist Lester Packer, these pills exist -- they are antioxidants.

Does your daily food supplement contain 50 mg of lipoic acid? Mine does. Did I even know that name until recently? No. So what's the big deal with antioxidants?

Some years ago, I've read a book which has changed my life by summarizing the vast amount of research which has been done in the past few decades on antioxidants and their role in preventing degenerative diseases.

If you read the Antioxidant Miracle, you won't be without antioxidants afterwards. Dr. Lester Packer is perhaps the world's leading authority on antioxidants, having pioneered much of the research himself at Packer Lab at U. C. Berkeley over the last three decades. The level of research is not mostly anecdotal, like, "I took vitamin E and my heart didn't hurt as much." Instead, it is at the high scientific level of being able to induce heart disease in laboratory animals by simply withholding vitamin E, and then seeing them improve when it is restored. There are clinical studies involving thousands of patients, which provide overwhelming evidence that antioxidants are major factors in preventing cancer, heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer's disease, arthritis and a host of others.

How long will it take us to get it? To figure out what we need to do to be healthy? To discover that major fatal diseases can be prevented by simple diet and supplements? The answer is often measured in centuries. Consider the killer disease scurvy, caused by a lack of vitamin C:

A.D. 1227: Gilbertus de Aguilla advised sailors to bring ample apples, pears, and lemons to avoid getting scurvy.
A.D. 1500's: World explorers Vasco de Gama and Magellan reported losing over half their crew to scurvy.
A.D. 1753: British physician James Lind published his results of testing several supposed cures. He found that sailors with scurvy who ate two oranges and one lemon per day were cured in a few days.
A.D. 1795: British Admiralty begins to require sailors to eat lemons and limes and scurvy ceases to be a problem.

Why did it take 500 years to for sailors to take the advice seriously to eat citrus fruit? And why 42 years after it was published by a physician? Probably because it is hard to believe that such a simple thing as eating an orange can prevent such a horrible disease.

Why are we so loathe to believe the idea today that so many of our killers today such as cancer and heart disease can be prevented by getting enough of the substances found in fresh fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods? Perhaps in the past, we had the excuse of a lack of evidence, but today that dodge is no longer an acceptable excuse for neglecting healthy practices. And Dr. Packer points out that a healthy diet is not nearly enough, we need to supplement our modern diets to get the optimum amounts of these antioxidants.

Dr. Packer explains that of the hundreds of known antioxidants, there are five which seem to be the most important, and which operate as a network, meaning that they help balance and recycle each other. Cells are essentially filled with water surrounded by a fatty wall, so both fat and water soluble varieties are important. Two of the network antioxidants are water soluble (vitamin C and glutathione), two are fat soluble (vitamin E and CoQ10), and one (lipoic acid) is both fat and water soluble. The importance of this latter team member has only been known in the last decade. It may be the most important of all and most daily supplement manufacturers don't even include it.

I have made a table summarizing the main results presented in The Antioxidant Miracle , including the optimum amounts recommended by Dr. Packer. It fits well on one page if printed in landscape mode. There are also links to a few bulleted charts below which summarize the importance of each of the network antioxidants and some others. You can message me if you need the table.

After reading his book, I went to both grocery and health food stores and hunted for a supplement that had something close to all his optimum amounts of antioxidants, as well as other usual vitamins and minerals. I found none. It is possible to buy most of them separately, but that is very expensive and way too hard for me to open all those bottles twice a day. I found that simply looking for at least 50 mg of lipoic acid is a good test of the entire supplement because few companies have kept up with the most recent research.

The best I've found so far is Life-Pak by Pharmanex, which is guaranteed to be very high quality as has been the Olympic's only licensed product since 1996. Life Pak plays an extremely important part in the TRA program as more antioxidants are consumed during the breakdown of fat cells.

In any case, if you read his book, you will build up your antioxidant protection.

Obesity Linked to Increased Cancer Risk

Weight management, exercise and proper nutrition are keys to reducing your risk of cancer. And the earlier in life you adopt these practices, the better off you'll be, a new study suggests.

Factors such as birth weight, childbearing, breast-feeding, and adult height and weight also influence cancer risk, according to the report released some months ago by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the Britain-based World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF). Understanding how these factors affect cancer risk, and how to put this information to use to prevent the disease, offer promising new directions for cancer research, the study authors said.

The WCRF said obesity can be linked to six types of cancer, five more than its last report, 10 years ago.

"We need to think about cancer as the product of many long-term influences, not as something that 'just happens,' " Dr. Walter J. Willett said in a prepared statement. Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, was one of 21 authors of the report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective.

"Examining the causes of cancer this way, across the entire lifetime, is called the life course approach," he added.

Among the new types are colorectal (bowel) and post-menopausal breast cancer.

The report, an analysis by scientists from around the world of more than 7,000 studies, offers 10 recommendations to help prevent cancer. They include staying lean, getting at least 30 minutes of exercise daily, limiting your intake of red meat and alcohol, and avoiding processed meats.

"These findings are right on," said Colleen Doyle, director of nutrition and physical activity at the American Cancer Society. "They are consistent with our own nutrition and physical activity guidelines. They clearly put the emphasis where the emphasis needs to be, and that's on controlling your weight."

"This is a good-news report," added Karen Collins, a nutrition adviser at the American Institute for Cancer Research. "If we are watching our weight, working regular physical activity into our daily life and eating a healthy balance of foods, we could prevent a third of cancers," she said. "Extra weight is not dead weight," she said. "It's an active metabolic tissue that produces substances that promote the development of cancer."

"People should take this message to be empowering," Collins said.

The analysis of the studies found a definite link between excess fat and cancers of the esophagus, pancreas, colon and rectum, endometrium, kidney as well as breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

The risk from excess weight begins at birth, according to the report. The reason for the link between birth weight and breast cancer has to do with body fat. Excess body fat influences the body's hormones, and these changes can make it more likely for cells to undergo the kind of abnormal growth that leads to cancer, the researchers said.

In addition, overweight girls can start menstruating at an earlier age. So, over their lifetime, they will have more menstrual cycles. This extended exposure to estrogen is associated with increased risk for premenopausal breast cancer, the report found.

Not smoking is the most important thing one can do to reduce the risk of cancer, Doyle said. But, she added, "there are estimates that obesity will overtake smoking as the leading preventable cause of death.

"It's great to see another report that emphasizes being active, watching your weight and eating a healthy diet are not only going to help you reduce your risk of cancer but heart disease and diabetes as well," Doyle said.

The report also found that breast-feeding can lower a mother's risk for developing breast cancer. In addition, breast-fed infants have a lower risk of becoming overweight or obese, and this means a lower risk of developing cancer.

"The evidence is uniformly strong on breast-feeding, and the fact that it offers cancer protection to both mothers and their children is why we made breast-feeding one of our 10 Recommendations to Prevent Cancer," Willett said.

In addition, tall people seem to have a higher risk of colorectal and postmenopausal breast cancer, according to the report.

"We found that tallness is also probably linked to increased risk for ovarian, pancreatic and premenopausal cancer as well," Willett said. Although the association between height and cancer is convincing, tall people are not destined to get cancer, he added.

Willett noted that being at increased risk is not a guarantee that you are going to develop cancer. "Risk isn't fate," he said. "The evidence clearly shows that risk can be changed.

"We wanted to point these emerging links out, because we now believe them to be more important than the scientific community, much less the public, has yet realized," Willett added. "Whether or not we get cancer has to do with our genes and with the choices we make everyday. Our cancer risk is also influenced by our whole accumulated life experience, from conception onwards."

Body weight and composition is a big factor, one expert said.

"This report really reinforces the connection between being overweight or obese and the increased risk of many, if not all, cancers," said Carolyn Lammersfeld, the national director of nutrition at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. "The majority of Americans are not aware of that connection. They are more concerned with pesticides and environmental contaminants, but obesity is a much greater risk factor," she said.

But risks can be minimized, she added. "If you don't have cancer, it's never too late to try to do what you can to lower your risk," Lammersfeld said. "In addition, cancer survivors should follow the diet and weight recommendations to prevent a return of cancer."

Fats Facts

Of all the essential nutrients required for optimal health, fatty acids have not only been forgotten, they have been considered hazardous.

Health has somehow been equated with “low-fat”or “fat-free” for so long, to suggest that fats could be essential or even therapeutic is to risk credibility. Recommendations to view essential fatty acids in a similar fashion as essential vitamins and minerals will be combined with therapeutic protocols for conditions ranging from cardiovascular disease, skin conditions, diabetes, nerve related disorders, retinal disorders and more. A complete restoration of health cannot be accomplished until there is a restoration of fatty acid nutritional information among health care professionals and their patients.

So what are fats? Dietary fats come to us from a variety of sources, but primarily in the form of triglycerides. These fatty acids are then used as energy by our cells or modified into phospholipids to be used as cell or organelle membranes. Some fatty acids are used in lipoprotein molecules to shuttle cholesterol and fats to and from cells, and fats may also be stored for later use. While many debates are ongoing concerning the ideal level of fats in the overall diet, this review will focus only on the types of fats available in dietary or supplemental forms and how they either harm or benefit your health.

What's the difference between saturated fats & non-saturated fats? Saturated fats are harmful to body health and they are found in high amounts in things like butter, coconut oil, palm kernel oil and beef fat. Found primarily in vegetable oils, nut oils (almonds, walnut etc), and fish oils. It is in this category that both essential fatty acids are found.

EPA is an essential fatty acid. This essential fatty acid is an Omega 3 fat, which is found in cold water fish. EPA is highly unsaturated fat and these polyunsaturated fats play a very important role with the function of our bodies.

DHA is a building block of tissue in the brain and retina of the eye. It helps with forming neural transmitters, such as phosphatidylserine, which is important for brain function. DHA is found in the retina of the eye and taking DHA may be necessary for maintaining healthy levels of DHA for normal eye function.

Cardiovascular system - EPA and DHA are converted into hormone like substances called prostaglandins, and they regulate cell activity and healthy cardiovascular function.

Human growth and intellectual development - DHA plays a very important role during fetal development, early infancy, and old age. High concentrations of DHA are found in the brain and increases 300-500% in an infant's brain during the last trimester of pregnancy. Adding DHA to a pregnant mothers diet may be beneficial for the fetus's brain development.

Elderly people should also take EPA - DHA, because as we get older, our bodies form less DHA and EPA, which may cause less mental focus and cognitive function. Taking EPA - DHA may also help with mental abnormalities, such as Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia.

There are other benefits to taking EPA and DHA because it also plays as a source of energy, it insulates the body against heat loss, prevents skin from drying and flaking, and cushions tissues and organs.

Who should take EPA - DHA? Most people can benefit from taking EPA and DHA.

The Crazy Makers

Have you ever wondered "How the Food Industry is Destroying Our Brains and Harming Our Children?"

Most people try to eat right. They read labels and avoid nutrosweet, MSG, and other suspect additives. And yet their energy level is still low, experience mood swings and occasional sleeplessness. I observe children who are anxious, moody, and have a difficult time in school. Wondering why so many people have such problems?

Examining the relationship of diet to changing levels of chemicals in the brain, author Carol Simontacchi finds that:

consumer baby-formulas and baby foods can be harmful to an infant's brain development;

ingredients and residues such as MSG and neurotoxins are present in our children's food, hidden by misleading labels;

stripping essential minerals from the foods being served to teenagers can be linked to anorexia nervosa, bulimia, poor cognition and behavior;

schools that strike deals with fast-food companies are among the worst saboteurs of a child's healthy diet and mind;

many supposedly health-conscious foods are so deficient in meeting adult needs that they threaten the physical structure of the brain.

This book both frightens the reader as it describes the bizarre results of our poor diets and offers an easy solution as it clearly and factually explains what vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and herbs are essential for physical and mental development and growth and what food products and additives not only are non-nutritive but actually harmful to growing bodies and minds. Anyone claiming this book is "junk science" is probably in the food industry, and a "Crazy Maker" himself.

You Are What You Eat

TRA helps you to build a good eating habit in 90 days. The first thing that most people think of is that their extra abdominal fat is simply ugly, is covering up their abs from being visible, and makes them self conscious about showing off their body.

However, what most people don't realize is that excess abdominal fat in particular, is not only ugly, but is also a dangerous risk factor to your health. Scientific research has clearly determined that although it is unhealthy in general to have excess body fat throughout your body, it is also particularly dangerous to have excess abdominal fat.

Why??

There are two types of fat that you have in your abdominal area. The first type that covers up your abs from being visible is called subcutaneous fat and lies directly beneath the skin and on top of the abdominal muscles.

The second type of fat that you have in your abdominal area is called visceral fat, and that lies deeper in the abdomen beneath your muscle and surrounding your organs. Visceral fat also plays a role in giving certain men that "beer belly" appearance where their abdomen protrudes excessively but at the same time, also feels sort of hard if you push on it.

Both subcutaneous fat and visceral fat in the abdominal area are serious health risk factors, but science has shown that having excessive visceral fat is even more dangerous than subcutaneous fat. Both of them greatly increase your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, sleep apnea, various forms of cancer, and other degenerative diseases.

Part of the reason visceral fat is particularly dangerous is that it apparently releases more inflammatory molecules into your body on a consistent basis.

If you care about the quality of your life and your loved ones, reducing your abdominal fat should be one of your TOP priorities! There's just no way around it. Besides, a side effect of finally getting rid of all of that excessive ugly abdominal fat is that your stomach will flatten out, and if you lose enough stomach fat, you will be able to visibly see those sexy six pack abs that everyone wants.

Food Fight

If you feel hungry, here is a cooool video to share....

Lose Twice the Weight by Tracking Your Food

You hear all the time that to lose weight, you should track what you eat. Well, a recent study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that keeping a "food diary" may double your weight loss efforts.

Researchers from Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research kept tabs on 1,685 overweight and obese adults (men and women), whose average weight was 212 pounds. The researchers encouraged participants to adhere to a reduced-calorie, DASH eating plan and asked them record their daily food intake and exercise minutes.

After 20 weeks, the average weight loss was 13 pounds per person. But researchers discovered something else; the more participants recorded what they ate, the more weight they lost in the end. Participants who did not keep a food diary lost about 9 pounds over the course of the study, while those who recorded their food intake six or more days per week lost 18 pounds — twice as much as those who didn't track any food!

So start to write your food diary today to double your fat loss result!

Breakfast Slide Show

<embed style="WIDTH: 426px; The biggest surprise is that there are many foods that most people regard as “healthy” and “diet friendly” that will actually make you even fatter.

Since you might be making the same innocent mistakes, I am sharing some of the most frequent and most damaging“healthy-foods-that-make-you-even-fatter”food choices.

Most dieters mistake the following food choices a great to eat while dieting. Unfortunately, they are really loaded with fats, preservatives and hidden calories....all big saboteurs if you are eating to get a slimmer belly, thighs and butt.

1. Diet Coke. No soda of any kind is good for you, diet or not. Diet soda create more insulin in your body which means more sugar. Diet soda also inhibits the hormone leptin which regulates your metabolism and appetite so you want to make sure you order your meals with water! That also helps you drink the correct amount of water per day.

2. Pretzels (biscuits). I know most people think that these are so much better for you than potato chips but they are made with enriched white flour which as I have warned you in the past is a big NO NO on the Belly Flat diet. Pretzels are also loaded with carbohydrates which as we all know we need to avoid as much as possible. An entire bag equivalent to 24 slices of white bread.....devastated?

3. Fruit Juices. Having a refreshing glass of orange juice in the morning is a great start to the day right? Actually you are probably starting your day out horribly. Fruit juices have so much sugar and most of them are not actually fruit juices. Some only contain 5% natural fruit juice. Even fresh fruit juices are not recommended as they're simple sugar yet no fibre at all. Eat your fruits rather than drink the juice.

4. Complete Salad Kits. Most of these kits seem great for those who are too busy to cut up all the vegetables we like in a salad, however, most of the dressings can add on hundreds of calories and more fat than you want in a day. The light varieties are better.

5. Reduced-Fat Peanut Butter. Like a lot of girls, I also love my peanut butter. The reduced-fat variety seems like a great idea but the fact that what they remove is replaced with fillers and there is no calorie reduction with the fillers. Also the fat that is removed is the kind that is actually good for you. Yes, there is some good fat! If you just use a little less of the regular kind you'll be a lot better off.

6. Poultry Hot Dogs. You would think hot dogs made with turkey or chicken would be so much better than the beef or pork dogs… WRONG! All hot dogs include skin and fat so you are not receiving any benefit from eating poultry dogs.

7. Cereal Bars. You can find a lot of cereal bars that are healthy, low-fat and are not loaded with calories, but you have to look. Most of the cereal bars at the grocery store are high in sugar and saturated fat. Make sure to read the labels for low fat, sugar and calorie content before you start your morning with an addition to your belly!

8. Frozen Yogurt. Most people hear the word yogurt and ask for seconds thinking that since it is yogurt it has to be good for you… WRONG! Most frozen yogurts have a lot of added sugar which means you're licking up extra calories. If you look for the low-fat frozen yogurt and go sparingly you can treat yourself every now and again.

As you can see, there are many things so many of us think are really“Healthy Diet Foods” when really they are not. Do not skip any one of them especially the breakfast. This is crucial to losing fat and keeping it off. Most overweight people tend to skip breakfast. They tell me they are not hungry in the morning and simply take a coffee and a biscuit. Well, duh... No kidding! They are not hungry because they ate 2/3 of their calories at night. They awake still feeling full.

I recommend eating a solid, filling breakfast within 30 minutes of waking up. This includes salad or stir fry (or steamed) veggies, some good complex carbs like whole wheat toast, oatmeal or high-fiber cereal. Along with a fist sized of protein like egg whites, chicken breast, fish or lean meat or soymilk. Stay away from deep-fried meats. Eating a good-sized breakfast is one big key to effective fat loss and keeps you energetic throughout the day.

NO refined carbs. That means no white bread, no cakes, no biscuits and no dessert.

Eating the majority of calories at night is one of the worst things you can do. Instead, try eating a solid breakfast, and then a small snack between meals. Some good examples of snacks include a small piece of fruit and different kinds of veggies like cucumber, carrots, baby corns, green/red/yellow pepper and celery. Chances are you will go to bed a little hungry but that's OK. You will live and you will be fine. When you wake up in the morning, you will be very hungry and look forward to your breakfast. Well, that's it -- the simple secrets and tricks that fit people follow. I follow this plan and it works - simply enjoy food and burn fat at the same time.

Join The Fat Loss Challenge 2009

Don't miss out on The Right Approach 2009's Fat Loss Challenge. She was 38. Then, four years ago, she made it a goal to loose weight, and she appeared on the January 2005 cover (left) at a toned 160 pounds. She thought she was finished with the weight battle. She was done. She'd conquered it. She was so sure, and was even cocky. She had the nerve to say to friends who were struggling, "All you have to do is work out harder and eat less! Get your 10,000 steps in! None of that starchy stuff!"

Bam! Karma is a bear of a thing.

So here she stand, 40 pounds heavier than she was in 2005. She's mad at herself. She's embarrassed. She can't believe that after all these years, all the things she knows how to do, she's still talking about her weight. She looks at her thinner self and think, "How did I let this happen again?"

It happened slowly. In February 2007, at 53, she started to have some health issues. At first she was unable to sleep for days. Her legs started swelling. Her weight started creeping up, first 5 pounds, then 10 pounds. She was lethargic and irritable. Her internal clock seemed totally out of whack. She began having rushing heart palpitations every time she worked out. She was scared that she would pass out.

"It seemed as if the struggle I'd had with fat my entire adult life was now officially over. I felt completely defeated. Fat wins. All these years I'd had only myself to blame for lack of willpower. I felt like the life force was being sucked out of me. I always had an excuse for being tired. It took extra effort to do everything. I didn't want to go anywhere, and I didn't want to be seen any more than I had to. I could oversee a show and a magazine that tell people how to live their best lives, but I definitely wasn't setting an example. I was talking the talk, but I wasn't walking the walk. And that was very disappointing to me. "

If Oprah had came over the 7 tips on how to choose a comprehensive fat loss program, she could have avoided her thyroid problem and the yo-yo disaster!

Comparison Of Other Weight Loss Methods

☆Cocktail Therapy
Theory: Drugs used contain thyroid hormones which breaks down
lean muscle mass (muscles, organs, etc.)
Side effects: Harmful to health, weight rebound quickly

☆Acupuncture
Theory: Each treatment uses 2 to 7 needles
Problem: Painful and inconvenient. One in 300 patients die as a result of the most common bariatric-surgery procedure.

Comparing Fad Diets

It is always recommended to take a balanced diet. Healthy weight management program which is well-balanced in terms of nutrition, exercise & spiritually.

2) Is it a safe plan i.e. no drugs (weight loss pills)? There is no magic pill. Unsafe and even deadly methods of weight loss are everywhere. Many people just see the results and figure the worst consequences of what they're doing won't happen to them.

3) Do you need to starve all the time? There is nothing wrong with the food. What makes people fat is how and what they eat. So it is important that the program is set to develop a lifetime healthy eating habit for the individual, even after the class. Eat too less would only result in more fat gain and muscle loss.

4) Is the program focus on fat weight loss or just weight loss? Because weight is only a figure and doesn't reflect the whole picture. It's the fat that makes people sick.

5) Is the program user friendly that allows you to carry out in daily lives on a long term basis? Some plans have lots of restriction that participants will easily give up after 2 weeks.

6) Is the program helping you to build muscles so to increase the metabolic rate to a certain extent to avoid any rebound or yo-yo sydrome in the future?

7) Is it an effective program that works for everybody? Realistic goal for you is to lose no more than 2-4 pounds a week.

Good luck!

Avoid Serious Mistakes In Fat Loss

"I Couldn't Believe It! I Lost Tons of Fat within 2 Days! And so can you!"

This statement sounds like a holy message to many. Who won't want to uphold their toned physique? Your unique physique has already lost in the cramming of fast foods and the long-term reprieve in front of the PCs. This advertisement definitely sounds more promising and convenient in this situation. But wait! You have to think a lot before you leap into these ever-promising weight loss advertisements. You will be ruining your health other than enhancing your appearance if you make those serious weight loss mistakes.

As per Medical definitions, "weight loss" is the reduction of total body weight which informally refers to an endeavor to look up fitness, health and appearance. . However, body weight is just a figure but what really risks our health is the body fat or more precisely the abdominal fat. So we should focus on the fat weight loss and that can be an attainable goal through healthy eating patterns, nutritional supplementation and regular exercise instead of taking drugs, liposuction or bariatric surgery.

The first and major mistake of the people who aspire to lose fat is the setting of unrealistic goals. They expect to lose tons of weight within one or two days as in the above advertisement. But it is important to realize that fat loss is a slow and steady process. Studies have proved that individuals, who rapidly lose their weight, gain it back at the same speed. It is safer and healthier to lose 2 to 3 pounds of fat weight per week. In that case it will be easy to maintain the fat weight and to reduce it again.

Anxiety is the side effect of weight loss for many people. They will compare their weight loss with who might have lost the weight considerably. There are other instances like the weight being static irrespective of the continuous efforts. The anxiety about not losing the weight will lead you to sleeplessness and further diseases. But there is no need to be anxious about these irrelevant factors. Everyone's body is different and the time to show the fat weight loss varies.

Another regular mistake made by people who try to lose fat is eating less. Many people will assume that the less you eat, the more you will lose the fat. But this habit in fact slow downs the metabolism of the person. The person who starves herself/himself to slim down will lack enough nutrients and calories in the body. As a result they come to a 'starvation mode'. An ironic impact of eating less is that you will tend to eat more than the usual routine. Since you are not having the regular food at the correct portion and correct time, you'll be liable to eat something or other at all instances. As a result, the body will gain weight instead of losing the weight. It is always advisable to develop a healthy eating habit in accordance with the instructions of a professional weight management consultant.

Exercise is a crucial factor to burn fat. The worst mistake some will make while taking exercise is to exercise hard from the beginning. Exercise must be started in a slow pace and with low impact. In the first week one can exercise for 10 to 15 minutes and can increase the time span regularly. One has to take the easy exercise steps in the starting, as the hard exercise will tire you easily. Walking is a very good exercise for all individuals - easy and free. As encouraged by the Department of Health, we should walk 10,000 steps every day.

Finally and more importantly, you must be optimistic about the result. Fat loss is an attainable goal. A good eating habit and regular exercise will definitely reduce your body fat. On the other hand a pessimistic attitude will pull down your efforts. You must not be too much obsessed with the scale. It is more vital to consider how you feel and how your clothes are fitting. It is desirable not to take any drugs or surgeries for fat loss as it may leave long lasting side effects.

Avoiding these casual mistakes will help you to stay away from many fat loss hazards.

PS. You must learn to face the ups and downs of fat loss. In any way, fat loss is not easy, but you can always do it!

Happy New Year, Happy New You!

Well this is it... the week where millions of people stand up and announce that they will make a change, reach a goal, achieve a lifelong dream, or all of the above. Have you set your 2009 goals with a clear action plan and go for it?

Whether you intend to exercise more, lose weight, stop smoking, cut down on alcohol or eat a healthier diet, experts agree that one of the keys to making a successful resolution lies in one's own confidence that he or she can make the behavior change and the commitment to making that change!

Here are some tips to keeping you on your path to a better you.

1) Think about what you would most like to do or change and stick with one resolution for now. I have been told by past clients that they were going to lose weight, stop smoking, begin an exercise program (after 25 years of sitting on the couch)... and to do all of this while they are going back to school for a second career!

2) Once you pick what's most important, be clear as to why you want this. It is definitely all about commitment. For example, do you really want to lose weight or are you doing it because someone else wants you to?

3) Have an emergency plan ready. Know what you will do in case that stressful event comes up which has triggered you to eat everything in the refrigerator, pantry and local convenience store! Have coping strategies and alternatives to eating in order to deal with problems that will come up.

4) Break down a huge resolution into smaller goals. You are more likely to achieve your goal by focusing on 5 pound increments rather than the 50 pounds. Set weekly and monthly goals and focus only on those. Once achieved, reward yourself. Treat yourself to a spa day, a pedicure, a favorite perfume you've been meaning to buy or even a new hairstyle!

5) No matter what, always love and accept yourself. You are NOT that 30 pounds you need to lose. You are a great and beautiful person who just happens to want to lose 30 pounds. Remember, You are you the same person with or without the 30 pounds. So be you! Don't wait to be happy until you lose that 30 pounds, be happy now!

Let's make this year our best year ever and take great strides towards achieving our dreams!

Ready For CHANGE In 2009?

The world has millions of starving people whereas there are billions overweight and obese.
